With the NCAA Tournament tipping off this week, CBS This Morning ran a feature on Wednesday with Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski reading an emotional letter to his younger self.
Duke takes on Iona on Thursday and Krzyzewski will seek his 13th Final Four appearance and sixth national championship in his 38th season with the Blue Devils. However, that all started with a passion born in the schoolyards and playgrounds of Ukrainian Village.
“Dear Mick,” The letter begins. “Keep playing those schoolyard games – I know that they are the best part of your day and you might not yet know that they are also important to your future. Those games you play with Moe and rest of the boys are laying a foundation for your future as a member and leader of teams.”
As the letter unfurls, Krzyzewski goes on to talk about how the enormous pressure of winning eventually began to weigh on him at around 50 and how important it was to reclaim some of that childhood innocence lost in the struggles of competition.
He talks about everything his parents sacrificed to afford him the opportunities he had and how being the first in his family to go to college and attending West Point shaped his life. It’s all a remarkably fascinating look into the mind of one of the greatest coaches, regardless of sport, in history.
You can watch the video in its entirety here and catch Duke taking on the Iona Gaels on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. ET on CBS.
