WATCH: Louisiana-Lafayette HC Bob Marlin has to be held back from going after LSU’s Will Wade

Whoever said you shouldn’t care about the NIT clearly never told LSU’s Will Wade or Louisiana-Lafayette’s Bob Marlin.

With just 12 seconds left in LSU’s 84-76 victory over the Ragin Cajuns, Wade called a timeout and turned toward Marlin’s sideline, evidently saying something to the Louisiana-Lafayette head coach. Needless to say, Marlin did not take very kindly to that:

It’s unclear what prompted this, besides a competitive game between two in-state teams (‘rivals’ would probably not be quite accurate). Clearly, however, Wade knew what he was doing, and was successful in getting a reaction out of Marlin.

Honestly, this is pretty embarrassing for all involved. First, Wade for going out of his way to show up an opposing coach. And then Marlin for taking the bait, losing his cool, and giving Wade the reaction he and the LSU crowd were hoping for.

For Marlin and the Ragin Cajuns, this caps off a very disappointing end to their season. After finishing the regular season at 16-2 in the Southland Conference, Louisiana-Lafayette looked destined for an NCAA Tournament berth, only to lose to Texas-Arlington in the Sun Belt tournament.

For LSU, this is definitely a nice victory, even considering there’s not a whole lot at stake, considering this is the NIT after all. Still, it’s clear that Wade is making every attempt to instill his own competitiveness in his players. This, however, is probably not setting the greatest example.

Unfortunately, the particular incident above was not all that Wade had in store. Even after things calmed down a bit, Wade had this to say to the LSU faithful in the crowd:

Wade even threw in another jab in the postgame press conference:

Yikes. It’s unclear if or when LSU and Louisiana-Lafayette will square off on the hardwood, but when it happens that will be must-watch television.
