On Saturday night, Baker Mayfield did exactly what many have expected him to do for weeks — the Sooners star won the Heisman Memorial Trophy.
The honor capped an award-filled week in which Mayfield also secured the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award and Associated Press Player of the Year honors. The Heisman, however, is far-and-away the most prestigious of the hardware Mayfield hauled in throughout the past several days.
After hearing his name announced over the likes of Stanford running back Bryce Love and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, who reeled in the Heisman a season ago, Mayfield approached the stage and shook the hands of seemingly countless former Heisman winners.
Then came Mayfield’s speech.
In a mix of giving thanks and expression emotion to the many that helped him climb the ranks from a former walk-on at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, to ultimately emerging as the top player in college football, Mayfield had much to say.

After earning the award on Saturday night, Mayfield now becomes the sixth Sooner to take home the Heisman Memorial Trophy, joining Sam Bradford (2008), Jason White (2003), Billy Sims (1978), Steve Owens (1969) and Billy Vessels (1952).
Furthermore, Mayfield became the first former walk-on to ever be honored as a Heisman winner.
