Wake Forest-Georgia Tech preview, keys to the game

Wake Forest started off 4-0 for the second straight season — the Demon Deacons finished 7-6 a year ago — after going 3-9 in the 2014 and 2015 campaigns.

However, the Demon Deacons are looking to get back in the win column coming out of their bye week after consecutive losses vs. Florida State (26-19) and at Clemson (28-14).

Wake Forest and Georgia Tech are squaring off for the first time since 2010, which was a 24-20 victory by the Yellow Jackets.  Georgia Tech is 22-8 in the all-time series.

Georgia Tech lost a heartbreaking contest at Miami in Week 7 as the Hurricanes rallied for a 25-24 victory capped off with a 24-yard field by Michael Badgley with four seconds remaining.

Yellow Jackets B-back KirVonte Benson left the game with a leg injury but coach Paul Johnson believes “he’s got a good chance” to play against Wake Forest, according to a report from ESPN’s Andrea Adelson.

Benson has 516 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, both marks good for second on the team.

The Demon Deacons are featuring an offense that, total yardage-wise, is proving to be quite balanced. Wake Forest has 1,337 yards passing and 1,094 yards rushing through six games.

Quarterback John Wolford has completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 947 yards, with 8 touchdowns and one interception. He’s run for a team-high 332 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Running back Arkeem Byrd, a redshirt freshman, has 267 yards rushing, with an average 5.4 yards per carry, and 1 touchdown.

Redshirt freshman Greg Dortch has been Wake’s leading wide receiver with 35 receptions for 430 yards and 5 touchdowns. Dortch was the first freshman in Wake Forest history to catch a touchdown pass in each of his first four games.

Georgia Tech was riding a three-game winning streak prior to the loss at Miami.

Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall, a junior, has completed 53.7 percent of his passes for 388 yards, with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s run for a team-high 541 yards and nine touchdowns.

Wake Forest is eighth in the ACC in scoring at 30.7 points per game, seventh in rushing at 182.3 per game and ninth in passing at 222.8 yards per game.

Georgia Tech is fourth in the ACC in scoring at 34 points per game, first in rushing at 362 yards per game  and last in passing at 77.6 yards per game.
