Virginia Tech announced Monday that the school has received an anonymous, $15.2 million donation to construct a state-of-the-art Student-Athlete Performance Center.

Virginia Tech president Tim Sands said the donation, made by a couple of Virginia Native and Virginia Tech alums, is the largest single offering ever received by the Hokies’ athletics department or the school as a whole.

The new performance center will encompass the entire fourth floor of the Jamerson Athletics Center on the school’s campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. It will be used by members of all 22 sports. A school press release stated that the fourth floor will more than double from its current 6,000-square foot footprint to 17,000 square feet. It will include space for dining, nutrition, donor hospitality, and recruiting areas. The gift also includes money to be set aside for future maintenance on the facility.

“These upgrades will enable us to utilize this space 300 times a year rather than 50,” Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock said. “It makes a huge statement to our commitment and vision to be the preeminent program in the ACC.”

Virginia Tech football coach Justin Fuente expressed his gratitude for the gift in the school press release as well.

“I don’t have the words to express the heartfelt gratitude that I have for these incredibly thoughtful benefactors,” Fuente said. I’m beyond excited about how all our sports and our student-athletes will benefit from the Student-Athlete Performance Center.

“Yes, this will make a tangible impact on recruiting the best and brightest talent to Virginia Tech. Yes, the enhancement of our sports nutrition program will help all our sports at Tech. But most importantly, this gift exemplifies the true spirit of Virginia Tech. We have a couple who not only want the Hokies to compete at the highest level sooner rather than later, but we also have a shining example that will hopefully move others to make an impact on the lives of Hokies for years to come.”
