In case you haven’t heard, USC football is on the rise once again.
The Trojans recently won their first conference title since 2008 and are preparing for a date with No. 5 Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl Classic. They’ve also seen a year-to-year boost in FanSided’s Fandom 250 rankings, which combines pretty much everything of which a citizen in Western civilization can be a fan.
USC ranked 9th among all college fanbases in America in 2017, a 4-place rise from No. 13 in last year’s rankings. In the overall rankings, the Trojan fanbase landed at the 107th position, bracketed by popular television shows Saturday Night Live (108th) and Gilmore Girls (106th). I know, I can’t believe Gilmore Girls beat out SNL, either.
From FanSided’s breakdown:
At this stage, Trojan fans are still figuring out their standing in the Clay Helton era, but one sentiment remains: USC football fans expect to be the best.
Beyond all the chest-thumping, the USC fandom stands out because of the Trojan Family.
Trojans take care of their own, whether that’s in the real world where the famous USC Alumni network spans worldwide or in the realm of sports where the USC community stands strong.
USC’s rank is the highest among Pac-12 schools, with Washington placed at No. 20 and UCLA coming in at No. 22. Much like last year’s Rose Bowl, the Trojans also edged Penn State, which was ranked 110th overall.
USC’s Cotton Bowl opponent, Ohio State, finished first in the college rankings for the second straight year and first overall, ahead of No. 2 Alabama (which squeaked past the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff selection), No. 3 (and Trojans rival) Notre Dame and No. 4 North Carolina.
Also on this list are LeBron James (No. 11), Netflix (No. 6), Amazon (No. 86), Jay-Z (No. 90), the Los Angeles Dodgers (No. 51), The Bachelor (No. 52), the WWE (No. 53) and Instagram (No. 74). I feel as though East Mississippi Community College (shoutout to the guy who growled like a Lion in the stands), of Last Chance U fame, deserves a mention for making the leap from the NJCAA to the rankings at No. 249 and 24th (out of 24) in college rankings. We should also talk about the massive upset (perhaps robbery) that was ranking YouTube personality Jenna Marbles (No. 58) eight places ahead of certifiable best rapper alive Kendrick Lamar (No. 66). This is why comment sections were invented.
