USA Today writer calls TCU most complete team in Big 12

TCU football looks like the Big 12’s best bet at a College Football Playoff berth through eight weeks of action.

USA TODAY columnist Dan Wolken and staff writer George Schroeder discussed the state of the Big 12 on the Football Four podcast on Sunday. TCU appears to be the most balanced team in the conference with a dangerous offensive attack led by Kenny Hill and a solid defense that’s slowed down some of the country’s best offenses.

“TCU looks like the most complete team,” Schroeder said on the podcast. “Is any of those teams [TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State] a national title-winning team? I’m not sure I’m ready to put TCU there, but they look like a playoff contender to me.”

The Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) have passed all of their early tests with Oklahoma State and West Virginia. The Frogs still have to go through No. 25-ranked Iowa State on the road on Saturday and No. 10 Oklahoma in a few weeks, but if they can land in the playoff, Wolken wants no part of game planning for the Horned Frogs.

“You get them into a playoff, I don’t want to spend a month worrying about preparing for Gary Patterson,” Wolken said.

One of the biggest thing going for TCU right now is Oklahoma and Oklahoma State’s recent struggles. The Sooners have looked beatable through four conference games and the Frogs already beat a Cowboys team that needed overtime to take down Texas.

If TCU runs through its conference slate unscathed, it will guarantee a rematch with a team the Frogs played in the regular season. But as for now, the Frogs control their destiny and are in a good spot to make the College Football Playoff as November approaches.
