Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the 2017 Heisman Trophy Award winner after having a great season and leading the Sooners to the College Football Playoff.
For USA Today’s Paul Myerberg, it is now time to look toward the future and the 2018 Heisman Trophy race, and he has three SEC players among his top ten to watch for during next season.
Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who will return as a junior after spending his first year in the Tigers offense, is one of the names mentioned by Myerberg. Slowly adjusting to his return to college football after sitting out a season, Stidham threw for 2,827 yards and 17 touchdowns while only being intercepted four times as Auburn won the SEC West and finished 10-3 before bowl season.
Following Stidham is the quarterback at Auburn’s rival Alabama and Jalen Hurts, who has only lost two games as a collegiate quarterback so far with the Crimson Tide heading into a matchup against Clemson in the College Football Playoff. Hurts, who will also be a junior, was a force both through the air and on the ground this season. He threw for 1,940 yards and 15 touchdowns to just one interception while rushing for 768 yards and eight touchdowns.
Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, who burst onto the college football scene as a freshman after the injury to Jacob Eason, is the third player listed. Fromm helped lead the Bulldogs to a SEC Championship and a trip to the College Football Playoff after throwing for 2,173 yards and 21 touchdowns as a rookie.
