A USA Today analyst thinks highly of one coach in the Big 12.
On Sunday, USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell wrote that Iowa State’s Matt Campbell is about to be “the hottest name on the coaching carousel” as the hot-seat season heats up throughout the country. This comes a day after Kirk Herbstreit had similar praise for Campbell.
Check out what Schnell wrote below.
1. Matt Campbell is about to be the hottest name on the coaching carousel
Just two weeks removed from a shocking win at Oklahoma — with a backup quarterback, no less — Iowa State knocked off another team on the road, beating Texas Tech 31-13 in Lubbock. At 3-1 (and 5-2 overall), the Cyclones are tied for second place in the Big 12, and it’s safe to say no one saw that coming. Surely this means that second-year coach Matt Campbell is due for a bigger and better job at the end of the season. The former Toledo coach went 3-9 in his first season at Iowa State, but the Cyclones dramatic improvement is turning heads across college football.
It will be interesting to see if Campbell receives any interest from possible SEC schools in the offseason. There could be multiple openings in the conference soon. Ole Miss likely will move on from interim coach Matt Luke. Perhaps Tennessee will do the same with coach Butch Jones.
Iowa State has impressed under Campbell, going 5-2 this season. The Cyclones beat Texas Tech on Saturday.
