Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams had the highest of praise for Duke forward Marvin Bagley on the ACC teleconference Monday, stating that he believes the freshman phenom is the best player in college basketball.
Luckily for the fourth-year coach, he may not have to deal with Bagley during the Hokies trip to Durham, N.C. on Monday.
Duke associate head coach Jeff Capel said during the teleconference that the Blue Devils are unsure about their leading scorer and rebounder’s status heading into their meeting with Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech is preparing as though Bagley will play.
Bagley missed Duke’s 80-69 victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday because of a mild knee sprain. Sophomore center Marques Bolden made his first start of the season in Bagley’s absence and tallied eight points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.
Freshman forward Wendell Carter Jr. picked up the slack in the interior for the Blue Devils, posting 19 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in his return to his hometown of Atlanta.
The Hokies are coming off a 61-60 upset of No. 1 Virginia on Saturday, and a victory over another top-15 team, regardless of whether Bagley suits up or not, would go a long way in getting them off the NCAA tournament bubble.
