UMBC beats Virginia in NCAA Tournament 2018, which is just so absolutely ridiculous

UMBC beat Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Tournament‘s opening round. This is not a drill.

UMBC is a No. 16 seed, while Virginia is the No. 1 seed in the South Region. A No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16 seed, in case you’ve never heard about that, and it’ll still be pretty nuts to see it happen here. Leading at halftime is one thing, but actually following through against one of the best teams in the country is another thing entirely. There are not enough words to describe this.

Virginia lost ACC Sixth Man of the Year De’Andre Hunter to an injury for the entirety of March Madness right before the tournament started, but that’s nowhere near enough to put the Cavaliers on even footing with the Retrievers.

UMBC, which stands for University of Maryland-Baltimore County, made the NCAA Tournament by winning the America East Conference Tournament. The Retrievers are the No. 188 team in the nation on KenPom’s analytics rankings, while Virginia sits perched at the literal No. 1 spot. Sixth-man injury or not, this was so absolutely nuts.

UMBC kept drilling shots and Virginia couldn’t make the ridiculous comeback. This actually happened, and I really don’t know what to do with my hands.
