UCLA Bruins center Thomas Welch has been named to the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award watch list. The list of 20 players selected to the watch list was announced Friday.
The annual award is given to the nation’s top center. It is named after Abdul-Jabbar, a former Bruin himself, perhaps the greatest NCAA basketball player of all-time.
Welsh, a senior, has averaged 11.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game over the past 2 seasons. Welsh should be one of UCLA’s best players this season and is expected to be the key to the Bruins’ defense.
The winner of the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be presented to the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles on Friday, April 6.
Last year Gonzaga’s Przemek Karnowski won the award. Wisconin’s Frank Kaminsky won in 2015, the first year the award was handed out, and Utah’s Jakob Poeltl won in 2016.
