Oklahoma may not be leading the Big 12, but the Sooners’ College Football Playoff hopes are still very much alive.
In a panel of Sports Illustrated experts, two writers picked Oklahoma to make it to the Playoff. Scooby Axson and Eric Single both see a bright future for the Sooners.
Single has Oklahoma in the final game of the year after winning a rematch with Ohio State.
Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State came so close to midseason that it seems to have thrown many people off the Sooners’ scent,” Single wrote. “But to me Baker Mayfield is the only individual player with half a chance of throwing Alabama off its game the way other recent superstar quarterbacks have in toppling the Tide.”
Axson didn’t give the Sooners much chance in the final four.
“My other three projected semifinalists [other than Alabama] have quarterbacks that have the potential to give Alabama fits, but their defenses, especially Oklahoma’s, would be challenged to slow down the Tide,” Axson said.
Every writer that didn’t have Sooners in the Playoff did pick them to make a New Years Six bowl.
It seems that experts realize that Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State was an aberration. The Sooners are still a good enough team to win the Big 12, and there’s plenty of football left.
