When Baker Mayfield came to Oklahoma, some thought that Trevor Knight would still hold the starting quarterback job once Mayfield became eligible. Oh, how wrong they were.
Knight ended up transferring and having a solid end to his career at Texas A&M, and Mayfield won the Heisman. Everything worked out in the end, and the two are still close friends. Knight’s opinion is still so high of Mayfield that in an interview with Pete Mundo of Heartland College Sports, Knight called Mayfield potentially the “best college quarterback ever”.
“I’m not surprised at all”, said Knight of Mayfield winning the Heisman. “He’s really the most consistent college football player that maybe I’ve ever seen…You look at how consistent and how he wins, and such a winner over the past three seasons at OU. There’s a lot of people that would want to argue that with me. But I stand by it. He could possibly be the greatest college quarterback of all time.”
It’s nice to see that Knight and Mayfield still have a healthy respect for each other. That’s a touchy situation to be around for a long time, and the pair navigated it masterfully.
