The Big O is a fan of Trae Young, it turns out.

Oscar Robertson, NBA legend and one of only two men to average a triple-double in a single season in professional basketball, gave Young a call Wednesday to offer support. Young tweeted about the call Wednesday evening:

Young talked to ESPN’s Jake Trotter about the call and said Robertson offered words of praise.

“That was crazy. A crazy phone call,” Young said Thursday, adding that Robertson told him “how much he loved my game, how he enjoyed watching me play. He gave me a lot of encouragement, stuff like that.

“It means a lot. Whenever someone like that calls and wants to talk to you and watches your games all the time, that’s a big day for me. I was really excited about that.”

Despite appearing on seemingly every end-of-the-year award watch list there is, Young’s had a rough week. The Sooners are on a four-game losing streak, he was on the wrong end of a Stephen A. Smith rant and LeBron James put some added pressure on him to go pro.

A nice phone call from one of the all-time greats was probably a welcome surprise for the Oklahoma freshman, to put it mildly.
