Top 10 LSU plays of 2017: Derrius Guice blows past Arkansas

BATON ROUGE, La. — The 2017 LSU football season gave us electric offensive showings and stifling defensive performances. But only 10 plays could make SEC Country’s countdown of the top LSU plays of 2017.

At No. 9 on our countdown, we look to the one LSU player who has proven his electricity more than any other over the last two seasons. In a game that was closer than it had any business being against an opponent that’s given LSU fits over the last three or four seasons, it took one brilliant run to break the score wide open.

Weaving and slashing through traffic untouched, here’s Derrius Guice gashing Arkansas for a 33-yard touchdown.

The play

With less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, LSU held a slim 13-10 lead of Arkansas. Aside from one bad drive, LSU’s defense had been impressive. But the offense was grinding in place, gaining yardage but not necessarily points.

Enter Derrius Guice.

Lined up as the single back behind Danny Etling, Guice took a first-down carry off left tackle, following center Will Clapp as he pulled through the hole. Clapp sealed off the edge with a wrap block, creating a seam between him and H-back J.D. Moore.

Guice slammed through that seam, bursting into the second level untouched. For a second, it looked as if an Arkansas safety had an angle on him and was going to bring him down for a modest gain. But Guice showed off his acceleration, speeding up and rendering every Razorbacks angle misdirected.

By the time Guice was at the 20-yard line, he had his back to every Arkansas defender. By the time he was at the 10-yard line, he started walking. No one could catch him. Thirty-three yards without a defender laying a hand on him. LSU had a 19-10 lead. Minutes later, the Tigers would expand that to 26-10. Then 33-10 on another Guice touchdown.

Guice finished the day with 147 yards and 3 touchdowns, a modest afternoon by the future first-round pick’s standards. And LSU came out with a win, its first of three straight to end the regular season. All sparked by one electric run from Derrius Guice.

Check back to SEC Country throughout the next two weeks as we continue our countdown of the top LSU football plays of 2017.
