Texas Tech-Iowa State preview, three keys to the game

  1. You have to be aware of the big chess pieces at all times. Where is Joel Lanning? Where is Kyle Kempt? Where is David Montgomery? Where is Allen Lazard? If Texas Tech can shut down these four big pieces, they can beat Iowa State. Lanning, Kempt, Montgomery, and Lazard are the best players on this Iowa State team, and they need to be shut down at every turn. Montgomery can change direction quickly, he needs to be brought down quickly and in the backfield. Kempt cannot be allowed a clean pocket. Lazard cannot get a clean release off the line of scrimmage. Lanning cannot be allowed to do his all-purpose thing. If Texas Tech can be aware and keep these guys in their sights, they will win.
  2. You’ll be able to hit things out of the backfield, Iowa State isn’t as fast as other teams. Arguably one of the biggest plus spots for this Texas Tech team is its depth at running back. The Red Raiders need to be able to utilize the running backs out of the backfield more often if they’re going to get one over on Iowa State. The Cyclones are disciplined but slower than other Big 12 teams, and this is an area that the Red Raiders can strike.
  3. Just get a win. Texas Tech needs a win over a solid Big 12 team, and the Iowa State Cyclones are a solid Big 12 team. It’s at home for the Red Raiders, and a bowl berth is within reach. A bowl game also saves Kliff Kingsbury’s job. Texas Tech needs a win here, badly, and if the Red Raiders can get a win, it puts them one step closer.
