Texas recruited best of any school at secondary, specialists, SI analyst says

Coach Tom Herman got the job done for the Longhorns last week.

Texas football hauled in a 2018 recruiting class that ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 3 in the nation. The class is highlighted by two 5-star recruits in the 247Sports composite rankings — safeties B.J. Foster and Caden Sterns.

As those ratings may indicate, Texas did quite the job of recruiting within the secondary. One analyst thinks that no other team in the nation did a better job in that department than the Longhorns.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Johnson wrote on Tuesday that Texas led the way in recruiting within the secondary and among specialists.

The top four players in the class, per the 247Sports composite rankings, are all listed as defensive backs. Foster and Sterns are joined by 4-star cornerback Jalen Green and 4-star safety DeMarvion Overshown.

And after losing All-American punter and Texas Bowl MVP Michael Dickson to the NFL Draft, the Longhorns also didn’t have much trouble in finding a replacement for the Australia native. Texas was able to land another Aussie punter, Ryan Bujcevski, in the 2018 class. He’s rated the No. 2 punter in the class within the 247Sports composite rankings, and just happens to be Dickson’s cousin.

Bujcevski isn’t the only noteworthy specialist the Longhorns brought in. Newly signed kicker and Austin, Texas native Cameron Dicker is rated the No. 4 kicker in the 2018 class, per the 247Sports composite rankings. Dicker played at Lake Travis High School — the same school that produced Oklahoma quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.

The Longhorns, looking to improve from a 7-6 campaign in 2017, kick-off the 2018 season against Maryland at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. on Sept. 1.
