Tennessee men’s basketball jumps to No. 16 in AP Top 25 poll, still below RPI ranking

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee basketball moved up three spots in the AP Top 25 poll to No. 16 after wins over Florida and Ole Miss this week.

The Vols (21-7, 11-5 SEC) have clinched a double-bye in next week’s SEC Tournament. Tennessee has regular-season games remaining at Mississippi State on Tuesday and home against Georgia on Saturday.

Virginia (26-2) remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25, while Auburn (24-5) is the SEC’s top-ranked team at No. 14.

Kentucky (20-9) is the SEC only other ranked team at No. 23.

The RPI computer ranking reflects Tennessee and the SEC in a much better light.

Auburn is No. 7 in the RPI rankings, Tennessee is No. 12, Kentucky is at No. 16, Texas A&M No. 26, Arkansas No. 30, Alabama No. 41 and Missouri No. 44.

NCAA Tournament projections

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi projected the Vols as a No. 3 seed matched up with No. 14 seed Northern Kentucky in Wichita in the West Region in Tuesday’s pairings.
