Tennessee football star Trey Smith ‘out indefinitely’ with serious medical condition

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee offensive lineman Trey Smith, arguably the Vols’ best returning player, is dealing with a medical condition that places his status as ‘out indefinitely’ according to a source.

The non-orthopedic issue was diagnosed earlier this month.

It seems unlikely at this point that Smith could be cleared in time for the start of spring drills. Smith could return for the start of fall drills if the treatment he is undergoing is effective.

Smith developed an issue during an offseason workout that led to further medical examination.

Tennessee has dealt with an uncharacteristically high amount of  injuries to key players over the past two seasons, but Smith’s condition does not appear to be one that could have been avoided.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Smith lived up to his billing last season as ESPN’s No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2017 class.

Smith was the only offensive lineman to start every game for Tennessee last season, lining up at four different positions.

Smith earned a spot on the FWAA Freshman All-America team and has been regarded as one of the most dominant freshman offensive linemen in recent history.

Tennessee had just one player earn All-SEC honors last season, and that was Smith. The University School of Jackson Tenn., prep product earned second-team honors from the AP and SEC coaches.

Smith was the first Tennessee true freshman to start at left tackle in at least 30 years when he lined up there against Southern Miss. He has been projected to start there in 2018 and anchor a young and inexperienced offensive line.

The University of Tennessee has not issued a release concerning Smith’s status or health at the time of this writing.

Smith took part in Tennessee’s community service event on Saturday in the Special Olympics “Polar Plunge” at the UT Aquatics Center and remains in good standing with the team.
