KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Winning the turnover battle might be the biggest aspect of Tennessee’s game against South Carolina to watch.
The Vols rank No. 104 in the country in turnover margin with – 4. South Carolina ranks No. 13 with a + 7.
Tennessee will enter the game Saturday coming off a bye week. Limiting the turnovers was a point of emphasis at practice during the open week.
Coach Butch Jones said during his Monday press conference the decision of who starts at quarterback will come down to who doesn’t turn the ball over.
“There are a number of things,” Jones said. “First of all, there’s taking care of the football. We cannot turn the football over. It starts with making good decisions with the football. I think the quarterback characteristics of leadership, bringing energy every day, command of the offense and then it gets back to decision making. The decision-making process is everything. Then it’s just consistency in performance, day in and day out, whether it’s practice or on gameday.”
Tennessee will give redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano his first career start this weekend. Junior Quinten Dormady has struggled with consistency through the first five games this season. He has thrown 6 interceptions and fumbled the ball 3 times.
Guarantano will need to protect the football in order to give the Vols a chance to win.
WMNL’s Josh Ward and SEC Country’s Blake Morgan discuss the keys to the game Saturday in the Tennessee football podcast.
