Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt clearly had a plan in place for his replacement of running backs coach Robert Gillespie.
A little more than 24 hours after Gillespie and the Vols parted ways, there has already been another hire. Former Heisman Trophy-winner Chris Weinke will be the running backs coach next season, according to 247Sports.com.
It’s no surprise, because Weinke and Pruitt have a connection. The former Florida State quarterback spent the past season an offensive analyst at Alabama. He was the quarterbacks coach under Jeff Fisher for the St. Louis/Los Angles Rams before Alabama.
Pruitt also added Joe Osovet as a quality control assistant. Osovet comes to the Vols as a head coach in the junior college ranks. He spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman about the hire.
“Whatever they need me to do, I’m just excited to be a piece of the puzzle and help us win football games in the SEC,” Osovet said. “We didn’t really touch on the specifics of it. I think I can bring something to the table from an offensive standpoint. Whatever it is, I’m just excited that I have this opportunity.”
WMNL’s Josh Ward discusses the two hires on Rocky Talk. He also brings on CBS Sports writer Barrett Sallee who talks about Pruitt’s long-term plans. Ward ends the podcast by taking stock of the SEC basketball landscape and where the Vols fit in.
