Tennessee football announced Tuesday it will begin spring football drills on Tuesday, March 20, leading up to the Orange and White Game on April 21.
New Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt is in the early stages of his evaluation period with the returning members of the team, who have been taking part in offseason conditioning.
Pruitt will also be looking to hire a new running backs coach in the next week after Tuesday’s news that he and running backs coach Robert Gillespie made a “mutual decision” to part ways.
Tennessee returns seven starters on offense and seven starters on defense from last season’s 4-8 football team.
The Vols will have only 11 scholarship offensive linemen, however, and offensive tackle Chance Hall has remained limited in the offseason drills.
Defensively, the cornerback position lacks experienced depth after Tennessee lost four players from that position.
The Vols returned three players from the two-deep at cornerback: sophomore Shawn Shamburger, and juniors Baylen Buchanan and Marquill Osborne. Sophomore Cheyenne Labruzza could be another option at corner.
Junior Tyler Byrd, a receiver his first two seasons with the team, is expected to audition in the defensive backfield this spring, as well.
Pruitt said on Signing Day that he wasn’t concerned with not signing any cornerbacks in the 2018 class.
“To me, I know some of the guys on our team, and we’ve got guys that can play corner. I think all of those guys can play multiple spots.
With redshirt senior safety Todd Kelly Jr. expected to return from injury, there’s a chance Tennessee could move one of its returning safeties outside, as well.
The Vols also announced that their Pro Day will take place on Monday, March 19.
