Teammates, opponents alike heaping praise on Trae Young

Trae Young isn’t just one of the best freshmen in the nation. He’s one of the best players in college basketball, full stop.

The five-star guard has boosted the Oklahoma Sooners to an 8-1 start that includes wins over two top-25 teams. On Saturday, the Sooners knocked off the No. 3 Wichita State Shockers in Wichita, led by Young’s 29 points and 10 assists.

If that sounds like a good game, consider this: for Young, it’s basically just another day at the office. The freshman is averaging 28.8 points and 8.9 assists this year. Those are obviously lofty numbers to keep up, but if Young manages to finish out the season at those marks, he’ll be only the 13th player and the second freshman in the history of college basketball to do so. (Jason Conley, of the Virginia Military Institute, accomplished those stats as a freshman in 2000-01.)

All of these stats are garnering Young plenty of praise from people that have watched him play. Take this sampling of quotes after the Wichita State game, for instance, collected by John Rohde of SoonerSports.com.

“I haven’t coached against a freshman that plays the game at that level,” Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall said after the game. “Hedging, switching. We tried everything against him. Trae Young is not going to get rattled. He is too good.”

“Statistically, it’s really off the charts, given what anybody else has ever done – especially through their first nine games,” Sooners head coach Lon Kruger said. “I think he’ll keep getting better, though, making better decisions and even better plays.”

“It took me a couple of games, but I realize I’m witnessing one of the greatest Oklahoma basketball players of all time,” said sophomore guard Kameron McGusty. “He’s going to go down as a legend here. It’s a blessing to play with him and to witness it with my own two eyes.”

Young is only nine games into his college career, and he’s already being talked about like he’s  the second coming of Steph Curry. If what Kruger said is right, and Young only continues to get better, the Sooners might find themselves making a deep run into March behind their superstar freshman.
