TCU would be among the top four teams in the country if the College Football Playoff Rankings came out today.
The Horned Frogs tied for No. 3 with Penn State in SB Nation’s projected playoff rankings this week. The projections are meant to rank teams in the same way the committee would, evaluating a team’s entire resume, including quality wins and strength of schedule.
Georgia comes in at No. 1 with Alabama at No. 2. TCU and Penn State split the vote for the third and fourth spots, so they were awarded a tie.
|Rank||Overall||Jason Kirk||Bud Elliott|
|t-3||Penn State||Penn State||TCU|
According to Kirk and Elliott, TCU may have the best win of any undefeated team in the country with a 44-31 victory at Oklahoma State in Week 4. Georgia’s 20-19 win at Notre Dame in Week 2 is the only other victory that compares. In terms of total resume, the Frogs and Bulldogs may have the two strongest records in the country.
So why aren’t the Frogs higher than Alabama or Penn State thanks to that win? Probably because of how the Crimson Tide and Nittany Lions have blown a lot of teams out this season. The eye test still matters to the committee, so that probably factors into these projections.
The Frogs will get a chance to improve their resume even more this week with a road game at No. 25 Iowa State. The first real playoff rankings come out next Tuesday, Oct. 31.
