TCU’s Kenny Hill admittedly ‘didn’t handle success the right way the last time’

To say TCU is having a successful season thus far would be putting it lightly.

The Horned Frogs entered the season unranked and have since climbed to the edge of the College Football Playoff discussion, sitting at No. 6 nationally on the strength of a 5-0 record.

TCU has been here before, and so has fifth-year senior quarterback Kenny Hill, although the last time he enjoyed such early-season success came in College Station. Most remember how that 2014 season played out for the Aggies after a 5-0 start and a No. 6 ranking of their own, but now a much more seasoned talent, Hill is aiming to handle quite replicable success this time around differently.

“I didn’t handle success the right way the last time,” Hill told ESPN of his time at Texas A&M. “We’re 5-0 right now. We also started that year off 5-0 at A&M. I’ve been at this point and seen where it could go, and really, where we’re trying to keep it from going.”

After the 5-0 start in 2014, the Hill-led Aggies proceeded to drop their next three games, although the losses did come at the hands of elite completion in No. 12 Mississippi State, No. 3 Ole Miss and No. 7 Alabama. Throughout that three-game stretch, Hill, who admittedly thought, “I am the next Johnny,” completed 96 of 141 passes for 904 yards and 6 touchdowns, but also threw 5 interceptions.

Texas A&M never found its full stride again after that three-game skid, finishing the year at 8-5.

This time around, a level-headed Hill is focused on the little things that have led TCU from a preseason middle-of-the-pack projection to the Big 12’s frontrunner and College Football Playoff hopeful.

“It’s about understanding who you are and what has gotten all of us here, the hard work, the extra throwing, the extra film study, all the little things,” Hill said. “You’ve got to keep doing those things because you can’t stop now.”
