TCU-Kansas State preview, keys to the game
Can TCU’s defense get pressure on Alex Delton?
Jesse Ertz’s injury throws a major wrench in Kansas State’s offense. The Wildcats will start sophomore quarterback Alex Delton in his place.
Delton is an outstanding runner, posting 79 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground against Texas last week. The Horned Frogs will need to contain him and limit his ability to leave the pocket. Delton was only 2-5 last week, and if they can force him into quick throws while preventing him from scrambling, the Horned Frogs might be able to shut down Kansas State’s passing game altogether.
Will the Frogs be able to run the ball?
Contrary to most teams in the Big 12, TCU makes its hay on the ground. The Horned Frogs are first in the conference in rushing yards per game, with 219.8. Darius Anderson is fourth individually, at 93 yards per game.
Kansas State’s run defense is solid, however. The Wildcats allow just 129.6 rushing yards per game. TCU will have to impose its will when running the ball if they’re to have any success. The Horned Frogs have done a decent job of that — their wins against Oklahoma State and Arkansas were almost solely due to the run game. Against West Virginia, however, the Frogs didn’t have the same type of success.
Kansas State’s penchant for controlling the ball will slow the game down. TCU might have to match them in a time-of-possession contest, similar to the Frogs’ game against Arkansas. The run game will be a major part of that.
Can TCU avoid a letdown?
Last week’s win against West Virginia was huge for the Horned Frogs. College GameDay was in attendance, TCU held tough in a tight contest and the Frogs jumped two spots in the AP Poll and commandeered first place in the Big 12.
This week against Kansas State could be a potential trap game for TCU. Gary Patterson will have to ensure that his players aren’t riding too high after beating the Mountaineers. And even though the Wildcats lost to Texas last week, they’re no pushover.
The Frogs control their own destiny in the Big 12. Losing to Kansas State would reshape the conference picture and potentially prevent TCU from getting a College Football Playoff berth. The Frogs need to take care of business this weekend and avoid blowing their shot at a conference title.
