If the College Football Playoff started today, TCU would likely be pitted against Alabama with a National Championship appearance on the line.
It doesn’t though, and despite enjoying a perfect 7-0 record and No. 4 ranking in the AP poll, the Horned Frogs still haven’t convinced everyone that they’re playoff-worthy.
That was evident with Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples’ latest College Football Playoff projections, who favored the Notre Dame Fighting Irish over TCU, or any other Big 12 team for that matter.
“You’re probably wondering where’s undefeated TCU in all of this? Well they’re right there and if they keep winning, they’ll make it into the playoff ranking that counts,” Staples said. “They’ll be in the top four. But right now, ask yourself this question: If you’ve watched TCU and you’ve watched Notre Dame, who do you think would win the game if they played?”

It’s also worth noting that TCU is far from the only Big 12 team still eyeing a playoff berth.
With Oklahoma and Oklahoma State positioned at Nos. 10 and 11 in the polls, respectively, the Sooners and Cowboys each still house legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations behind 6-1 resumes. Furthermore, three mammoth resume-building opportunities against ranked foes await Oklahoma, including meetings with Oklahoma State and TCU. The same can be said for the Pokes, who begin a three-game stretch against ranked competition on Saturday against No. 22 West Virginia.
If either can win out and secure the Big 12 Championship, it would be hard to argue against Oklahoma or Oklahoma State when it comes time for the College Football Playoff committee to makes its decisions.
And of course, TCU controls its own destiny going forward and appears to be a shoo-in playoff pick if the Horned Frogs do, in fact, finish the regular season unblemished and take home the Big 12 Title.
In short, if the Big 12 doesn’t make the College Football Playoff, it will likely be because of its own doing, not because a perfect TCU or 12-1 Oklahoma or Oklahoma State squad isn’t worthy of a bid.
