The 2017 Heisman Trophy was awarded to Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield.
The season isn’t even over yet, but Sports Illustrated posted a super early list for the 2018 award on Monday night.
Fifteen different players were listed and SI broke them up into three categories:
If they come back, probably coming back and no choice but to come back. Penn State QB Trace McSorley was one of the 15 players listed and fell under the ‘probably coming back’ category.
Here’s what SI’s Andy Staples said of the would-be senior:
“With Saquon Barkley probably headed to the NFL—and possibly getting picked in the top three—McSorley will have to carry more of the load in Penn State’s offense. That should be fine for a guy who plays in a similar fashion to the quarterback who just won the Heisman. The promotion of quarterbacks coach Ricky Rahne to offensive coordinator following Joe Moorhead’s departure for Mississippi State should allow for continuity that should only help McSorley.”
Staples makes a great point that Barkley will most likely move onto the highest stage. With that, where would the Nittany Lions turn to offensively?
Well, how about its senior QB?
Remember though, we’re not even in the 2018 calendar year yet. But, McSorley will undoubtedly be looked upon to lead Penn State next season. That much is for sure.
