ROEBUCK, S.C. – Bryce Thompson, the top-rated athlete from the South Carolina recruiting Class of 2018, has a couple of options to consider over the next few days.
First, will he sign on Dec. 20?
Second, if he does sign, which school will it be?
Thompson, a 3-star from Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, S.C., will reach a conclusion for the first question within the next few days. Obviously, there’s just over a week before the signing period begins.
South Carolina, where he took an official visit this past weekend, is among the answers he’s considering for question No. 2. Virginia Tech, where he was once committed, is still “a little bit” of an option. Temple and Marshall are in the mix, too.
During Shrine Bowl practice on Monday, he wore Gamecock gloves, to go along with a matching pair garnet and black Under Armour cleats.
“I had a great time. My host was JaMarcus King and we just talked ball and had a great time,” Thompson said of the official visit.
“He just told me everything, his process coming to Carolina and why he was at Carolina. I really appreciated that. He was just telling me a whole lot of DB stuff and stuff I need to know to get on the field quicker, so that really helped. I appreciated that.”
South Carolina defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson wants Thompson to play cornerback and nickel back, though playing wide receiver was once thought to be a possibility.
Heading into his senior season, Thompson had some ground to make in the classroom. On Monday, he said he’s back on track academically, to be a full-qualifier. And it was certainly a topic of conversation with Robinson and coach Will Muschamp, when they met over the weekend.
“They’re proud of the fact that I handled my schoolwork. … They were just saying I held my end of the deal in doing my work,” Thompson said. “I told them I would do my work and get my grades up and qualify. I did and they were really appreciative for me doing that.”
It also gives him a sense of pride.
“It just makes me think, I wish I had done that when I first started (high school),” Thompson said. “But I think this journey helped me mature a lot. I really do appreciate it. I just hate that it happened, but it all works out in the end.”
