South Carolina recruiting: 4-star DE Curtis Fann Jr. recaps bowl practice visit

The Champ treatment

There aren’t many coaches who are going to outwork Muschamp on the recruiting trail. Since arriving in Columbia about 24 months ago, the Gamecocks coach has made it clear that he’ll zero in on the prospects he really wants and will personally recruit them.

Guys such as 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.) and 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) are among the top remaining targets for Muschamp in the 2018 class.

Four-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. is among the early 2019 prospects who have been identified by Muschamp. Fann, who’s from Twin City, Ga., visited South Carolina on Saturday, to watch bowl practice.

Just days earlier, he listed the Gamecocks among his top 4.

“South Carolina offered me first. They believed in me first. I talk to Coach Muschamp more than I talk to any head coach, by far,” Fann said. “It’s a good relationship and I like the program.”

Fann (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) shared a couple of thoughts about the other three schools inside his lead group.

Clemson: “They put a lot of defensive linemen in the league and they produce elite D-linemen every year. That’s a plus.”

Florida: “Same thing with Florida. They have a good D-line coach. It’s pretty much the same, pretty much the same.”

Auburn: “I’ve got a good relationship with Coach G, coach [Rodney] Garner, coach [Gus] Malzahn and I just had a good time when I went there this summer.”

According to the 247Sports composite, Fann is the No. 16 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2019.

“[Muscamp] was just telling me [Saturday] about how many defensive first-round draft picks he’s put in the league and he isn’t selling me on starting spots,” Fann said, “but telling me I have an opportunity to play if I come there.”

Defensive line coach Lance Thompson also caught up with Fann, who is the No. 253 overall prospect in 2019.

“Me and Coach Thompson just talked about family stuff, outside of football,” he said.

Offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon had a word, too. So did junior wide receiver Deebo Samuel and sophomore defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

Up next for Fann is a commitment, but he has no timeline for a decision.

“A good coach, family feel, if it feels like family, like home up there,” he said, when asked about factors in the commitment process.

“If the people make me feel at home, away from home — good people.”
