South Carolina recruiting: Several defensive ends among Gamecocks’ top 2019 targets

Whenever Will Muschamp lands a commitment, the South Carolina coach drops a #SpursUp on Twitter. Come to SEC Country for the latest news, notes and observations in South Carolina recruiting.  For previous editions of SpursUp Surveillance, check out the link.

The 2019 South Carolina recruiting class, Will Muschamp’s fourth group with the Gamecocks, currently includes six commitments, two of whom are committed to play on the defensive side of the ball.

SEC Country takes a look at the defensive ends who could eventually join them in the Gamecocks’ 2019 haul. Included in this feature are prospects for the ‘Buck’ position, which is a hybrid of the defensive end and outside linebacker positions.

Current South Carolina Bucks and defensive ends

  • Redshirt junior Daniel Fennell (Buck)
  • Redshirt junior Shameik Blackshear
  • Junior D.J. Wonnum (Buck)
  • Redshirt sophomore Griffin Gentry
  • Sophomore Brad Johnson (Buck)
  • Freshman Tyreek Johnson
  • Freshman Kingsley Enagbare

Ideally, the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class would have included one more defensive end, to go along with Johnson and Enagbare, but the Gamecocks missed out on a handful of highly-recruited prospects.

With that spot remaining and the potential for attrition over the next 10 months, multiple defensive ends and ‘Bucks’ are expected to be signed in the 2019 class. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a combined total of three or four players at that position. Of course, two are already committed.

Four-star defensive tackle signee Rick Sandidge could see time at the position, as well as 3-star offensive tackle Jesus Gibbs, who signed as a defensive lineman. But we’ll classify them as tackles in this series.

  • 4-star Rodricus Fitten (Atlanta, Ga.): Committed
  • 3-star Devontae Davis (Georgia Military College): Committed
  • 5-star Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.)
  • 4-star Savion Jackson (Clayton, N.C.)
  • 4-star Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin City, Ga.)
  • 4-star Joseph Anderson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
  • 4-star Traveon Freshwater (Elizabeth City, N.C.)
  • 4-star Derrick McLendon (Tucker, Ga.)

The latest

South Carolina’s most senior commitment, Fitten, profiles to play the ‘Buck’ position while Davis is slotted to play defensive end.

Pickens, Fann and Anderson have visited the Gamecocks in 2018. Those three, plus Jackson, who’s set an official visit for June, seem to be the most likely candidates to eventually join the class.

Pickens, who’s already listed at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds, also could be listed as a defensive tackle in this series, but will remain listed as an end, unless that changes on the 247Sports composite. Sort of like his former teammate, Stephon Wynn Jr., who signed with Alabama, Pickens profiles as a prospect who could play end and tackle.

Fann could be closest to jumping on board with South Carolina, though a decision may not be reached for another couple of months. In fact, he’s already landed an unofficial Crystal Ball pick from SpursUp Surveillance. Pickens has one, too, but it’s unclear how long he plans to remain uncommitted.

Freshwater, Izuchukwu, Harris and Diabate profile at the Buck position. Both Izuchukwu and Harris worked out at the position last summer with assistant coach Mike Peterson.
