We are tackling the best question supplied by South Carolina recruiting fans each day. If you’d like to submit one, tweet to Hale McGranahan here.
Welcome to Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017.
@tansan23 asks … K.J. Henry’s dad, we hiring him?
I haven’t been told no. Haven’t been told yes.
But I don’t think so. To me, it’s kind of a shame this got blown up like it did this week, because I don’t really think that it’s in the works, and it’s not like this is a new development. Henry’s said all along that if one of his top schools hires his dad, then he’d be more likely to sign with them.
I could be totally wrong, but I just don’t see it happening.
@FeatheredWarrior asks … Can you list out the commitments or possibly commitments gained that are directly attributable to instability at other programs?
Israel Mukuamu, a former Florida State commitment, is the only one who’s committed.
Asante Samuel, a 4-star cornerback who’s still committed to the Seminoles, could sort of fall into that category, if he de-commits and jumps on board with the Gamecocks. But the key difference there is he’s remained committed to the new staff.
Like Samuel, 3-star linebacker Rosendo Louis is still committed to Florida State. He’ll make a final decision next week, before enrolling in January.
Four-star cornerback Jaycee Horn is another, though his commitment to Tennessee may not have stuck, even if Butch Jones and his staff were retained.
@donchambers82 asks … You think we can flip the LB from FSU?
That’s Louis, who was just mentioned above.
Absolutely. The timing’s in South Carolina’s favor and Travaris Robinson has certainly played a big part in keeping the Gamecocks in the mix.
@DHannum8 asks … What are your opinions on Tyreek Johnson? With the 8-10 recruits we are close to signing this year, tough to justify spot?
If they weren’t going to bring him in with 2018, it would have already happened by now.
No. 1: I like his quickness for a guy his size, which was around 6-foot-4, 245 pounds during his senior season. I think he’ll take on some more weight and probably slide inside to play tackle. To me, Johnson is one of those potential upside, under-the-radar in-state guys that Muschamp & Co. have could developed into a good player.
I’m really curious to see how ready he is to play when he shows up in January, after greyshirting this year.
To answer question No. 2, no. I thought he was a good prospect in the 2017 class. I certainly think he could have collected a few more offers had he not firmly committed in the spring of his junior year.
@scott_higg asks … Top 3 recruiting coaches on SC’s staff?
Will Muschamp, Travaris Robinson and Bryan McClendon
