South Carolina recruiting: Georgia pledge enjoys ‘great’ visit to Williams-Brice

Whenever Will Muschamp lands a commitment, the South Carolina coach drops a #SpursUp on Twitter. Come to  SEC Country for the latest news, notes and observations in South Carolina recruiting.

South Carolina hosted a pair of 2019 Georgia commitments for the 48-22 win over Arkansas: 5-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood and 4-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney Jr.

The two prospects were joined by two teammates from Cedar Grove High School (Ellenwood, Ga.): 2019 defensive end Tworn Seals and 2020 linebacker Isaiah Ratcliff, who was offered by the Gamecocks on Saturday.

“The visit went great,” Cheney said.

Plenty stood out to the 6-foot-3, 270-pound prospect.

“The love I get from all of the coaches. Not only that, but the players; they talked to me about it, how it would be if I decide to go there and all that,” Cheney said. “That stood out a lot.”

Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and “a lot of different people” spoke with Cheney, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 11 defensive tackle in the Class of 2019.

“[Muschamp] was just telling me how bad they needed me and all that,” Cheney said. “He just told me to watch my position.”

“It was kind of the same thing,” he added, when asked about the conversations with the other coaches.

“T-Rob and I had a good little conversation.”

Cheney spoke with several of the Gamecocks who hail from Atlanta: redshirt sophomore wide receiver Randrecous Davis, senior linebacker Bryson Allen-Williams, sophomore “Buck” D.J. Wonnum and sophomore cornerback Korey Banks.

It was Cheney’s first game-day experience at South Carolina, though he’s been to the school several times, including an April visit for the spring game.

Georgia is the only other school Cheney has visited this season and he’s not sure if he’ll make it back to Columbia for a game in 2017.

But South Carolina certainly made an impression on Saturday. The atmosphere at Williams-Brice Stadium, he said, was exciting. The defensive line’s performance also caught his eye.

This season, Cheney has 4 quarterback sacks. He’s returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns.
