Jamie Pettway grew up dreaming about a college football career in the SEC. So far, he’s got two avenues to make that happen.
South Carolina offered the 2019 linebacker in January.
“It was a blessing. It felt unreal when I first received the information from [outside linebackers/defensive ends] coach [Mike] Peterson about them offering me,” Pettway said. “It just felt like it was only the beginning, though. I’ve still got a lot to work for, a lot to grind for.”
A few weeks after South Carolina’s offer, Tennessee followed suit.
“Coach [Jeremy] Pruitt, I know he was the defensive coordinator at Alabama, so I know he’s defensive-minded. … I got a chance to meet him, when he came to my school when he was with Alabama as a recruiter,” Pettway said. “I know he focuses on defense and he’s going to work, get the job done.”
Maryland, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic and Chattanooga have also offered Pettway, a 3-star prospect from Westover High School in Albany, Ga. He’s yet to hit the road for any visits in 2018, but he’s planning to return to South Carolina. Trips to Tennessee and Auburn are also possibilities.
The Gamecocks hosted him last April for the Garnet and Black spring game.
“It’s crazy. The atmosphere is crazy. It’s one of a kind. I haven’t seen anything like that before, until I got there,” he said.
Peterson serves as Pettway’s primary recruiter for the Gamecocks.
“He’s a real cool guy, a real defensive-minded guy, so I know he’s going to work me, if I was to go there,” Pettway said.
Florida and Georgia are among the other schools he’s in contact with, though neither have yet to offer. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound prospect will keep a handful of factors in mind as he moves through the recruiting process.
“They would be the graduation rate, the depth of the position I’m playing and then the scheme that I’m playing,” Pettway said. “And, of course, the home feeling of the college, just the environment of the college.”
According to the 247Sports composite rankings, he’s listed as the No. 43 outside linebacker in the Class of 2019.
