COLUMBIA, S.C. – A Twitter shout-out from Snoop Dogg might get some attention in the South Carolina football team’s locker room.
But it’s nothing special to junior cornerback Keisean Nixon, who played in the Snoop Youth Football League while growing up in Compton, Calif.
“That’s like every week,” Nixon said, when asked about Sunday’s tweet from the famous rapper.
“[I] talk to him every week. He’s famous to y’all, but he’s not famous to me.”
Nixon upped his celebrity status with Gamecock fans on Saturday night when he got his hands on an Arkansas pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.
“Ran a hitch-route. I jumped it,” Nixon said. “There wasn’t really anything else to it.”
It certainly got a little more attention when Snoop showed some love on social media. Nixon’s relationship with him goes back to when he was “real little.”
“He’s cool. He’s cool with my family,” Nixon said. “I just played on his team. I played on the Compton Vikings and then his all-star team. Just being around him and a bunch of guys on our team are in the [NFL] or college, like JuJu Smith, kids like that. We played on the same team.”
Snoop, Nixon added, is “a real coach.”
“He’ll coach you hard, too,” Nixon said. “He’ll cuss at you, everything.”
But there’s more to Snoop than tough love.
“He was always supportive and a positive dude around us,” Nixon said.
