Taron Vincent: Commitment
Vincent committed to Ohio State in April 2017 over a slew of offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, UCLA, USC and Wisconsin.
“I talk to [defensive line coach Larry] Johnson and [Urban] Meyer once a week,” Vincent told Land of 10 in August 2016. “We’re really tight. I went to camp up there this summer. I like Coach Johnson a lot, I love how he teaches and the techniques he teaches. You see all the guys he puts in the NFL, so you know he knows what he’s doing.”
What Taron Vincent brings to Ohio State
Vincent is the exact type of elite defensive end that Ohio State has been chasing in recent years only to come up just short to southern schools like Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. His presence is a huge boon to Ohio State, and he might have the highest ceiling of any defensive tackle that Johnson has coached during his time in Columbus. When paired with the elite defensive ends on the Buckeyes’ roster it should help keep the Ohio State defensive line as one of the most feared units in the country.
His path to the field depends slightly on whether or not redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones will enter the NFL draft after the 2017 season. The good news for Vincent is that even if Jones returns, his path will be more favorable than that of the defensive ends. There are a bunch of defensive tackles in the rotation, but none are the caliber of the defensive ends that helped keep 5-star freshman Chase Young from playing meaningful snaps in 2017. It’s not guaranteed that Vincent will develop that quickly, but the path is there if he does.
