Signee 101: Get to know 4-star Notre Dame QB Phil Jurkovec

Phil Jurkovec-Amon-Ra St Brown-U.S. Army Player of the Year

Phil Jurkovec is arguably the most versatile high school quarterback in the Western Pennsylvania area this season.

The 4-star dual-threat quarterback out of Pine-Richland (Gibsonia, Pennsylvania) verbally committed to Notre Dame all the way back on May 16, 2016. Jurkovec committed to Notre Dame over Ohio State.

Jurkovec is now officially committed and signed his letter of intent on Wednesday.

Jurkovec is rated as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the nation for the Class of 2018.

Jurkovec took his official visit to Notre Dame on Oct. 21 after taking unofficial visits on Sept. 9 and Sept. 17.  Jurkovec took another unofficial visit to Notre Dame on Oct. 29.

How Phil Jurkovec fits at Notre Dame

Jurkovec had a record-breaking senior season at Pine-Richland en route to capturing a state title.

The electrifying dual-threat quarterback went 16-for-26 for 191 yards and one touchdown through the air along with 84 yards and four touchdowns on the ground during the state title game victory.

Jurkovec capped off his senior season at 246-for-336 (73.2 completions percentage), 3,960 yards and 39 passing, while rushing for 1,220 yards on nearly 11 yards per carry and 24 rushing touchdowns.

Jurkovec’s 5,180 single-season offensive yardage total (passing, throwing, receiving) is a state record.

For his high school career, Jurkovec has amassed 11,144 yards, which is the second-most in WPIAL history. The astounding fact is that Jurkovec racked up these numbers in just 2 ½ seasons, as he missed half of his sophomore season due toa thumb injury.

Jurkovec can immediately vie for the starting quarterback spot on a Notre Dame squad that currently has junior Brandon Wimbush at the helm.

One well-respected local in Western Pennsylvania offered up the ultimate praise that should get Notre Dame fans super excited about Jurkovec.

Former North Hills coach Jack McCurry has previously coached against Pennsylvania legend Dan Marino.

McCurry believes Jurkovec is even better than Marino at this point in his career according to a story from Post-Gazette reporter Mike White.

“He probably is the best quarterback I’ve seen in high school. Phil Jurkovec is unique in that he’s about 6-5, has really big hands to grab a football, and he’s not just an athlete who happened to play quarterback. He’s a quarterback who’s an athlete,” said Butler. “He throws the ball down the seams as well as any college quarterback. … Marino was something. I don’t like to go totally out on a limb, but I think [Jurkovec] is one of the finest we’ve ever had around here.”
