Signee 101: Get to know 4-star Michigan DE Aidan Hutchinson

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson of Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child High School signed his National Letter of Intent with Michigan on Wednesday. Hutchinson is a 4-star prospect, according to the 247Sports composite. He committed to Michigan on Feb. 21 and has accepted an invitation to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

Meet Aidan Hutchinson

Aidan Hutchinson’s father and uncle are former Michigan football players and team captains. His mother is a Michigan alum. His two older sisters go to Michigan. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Hutchinson would be wearing maize and blue, and maybe it was, but he did his due diligence looking at other options before making his decision.

Hutchinson was a three-way player at Divine Child, playing end on defense, tight end on offense and being the team’s long snapper on punts and kicking attempts. He rarely came off the field unless the game was well in hand and teamed with quarterback Theo Day to help lead Divine Child to the Michigan Division 3 state quarterfinals. The next time Hutchinson and Day see each other in a football game, it will be from opposite sidelines. Day is expected to sign with Michigan State in the early period.

On-field analysis

There’s a term you’re going to read and hear a lot associated with Hutchinson: high motor. He played a lot of snaps at Divine Child and didn’t get much rest but that didn’t hurt his production on the stat sheet or change how he affected the game with plays that don’t show up in the stats. Hutchinson is 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, and plays with high intensity. It’s a family trait that preceded him in his father, Chris, and uncle, Steve.

Hutchinson had 27 solo tackles and 30 assisted tackles on defense to go with 12.5 tackles for loss. He also caught 38 of the 45 passes thrown his way on offense for 418 yards and 7 touchdowns. He’s also a stalwart blocker.

Hutchinson was named to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team and the Detroit News Dream Team, and he was invited to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
