Signee 101: Get to know 4-star Mayfield OL Jalen Mayfield

Tackle Jalen Mayfield is signed his national letter of intent with Michigan on Wednesday. Mayfield is a 4-star prospect, according to the 247Sports composite. He committed to Michigan on May 23 and has accepted an invitation to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

Meet Jalen Mayfield

Jalen Mayfield wanted to be the next Rob Gronkowski. Mayfield envisioned himself as a receiving tight end who would give defensive coordinators nightmares trying to figure out how to cover him, along with being devastating as a blocker. That all changed a couple of years ago when Grand Rapids Catholic Central coach Todd Kolster convinced Mayfield that his 6-foot-5 frame would grow to be better suited playing tackle. There would be no touchdown receptions in Mayfield’s future, but he has paved the way for plenty of scores while helping GRCC win consecutive Michigan Division 4 state titles.

“He’s pretty special and, in my opinion, he’s the best lineman in the country,” said GRCC senior running back Nolan Fugate, who set a Division 4 championship game record with 306 yards rushing and scored a total of 5 touchdowns in a 42-31 win against Edwardsburg. “I can’t think of anyone I’d want to run behind than him. We ran to his side [right] a lot and we ran to the left side where he pulled around. He was involved in all the runs.”

Mayfield committed to Michigan after previously committing to Minnesota.

On-field analysis

Mayfield has excelled on both sides of the ball. All that athleticism that allowed him to dream of being a tight end is evident in his footwork and ability to keep with defenders. Watching his highlight video, one aspect that stands out is how many times he finishes blocks downfield. Mayfield told Land of 10 in August that one of his top goals this season was to never become complacent. It appears he achieved that goal.

Mayfield was named to the Detroit Free Press 2017 Dream Team, signifying all-state honors regardless of division, and received the same honor from the Detroit News. He is one of three current Michigan commits scheduled to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
