Matthew Jones: Commitment

Jones had about as straightforward a recruitment as Ohio State fans could hope for. He visited Columbus a few times and then committed in June 2017. He became the third Erasmus Hall product in the last five recruiting cycles to choose Ohio State, joining H-back Curtis Samuel and safety Jahsen Wint.

“He was very cool and very calm [during his recruitment],” Erasmus Hall coach Danny Landberg told Land of 10. “It’s great that he’s not a big social media kid. I dealt with all of that for him. I brought him to meet Urban Meyer in eighth grade because I want Urban to see what’s going on. Urban understands why I’m bringing a certain kid that far. But I thought [Jones] handled his recruitment really well.”

Since committing to the Buckeyes, Jones hasn’t flirted with any other schools. His only visit this fall was an official to Ohio State.

What Matthew Jones brings to Ohio State

Jones has been listed by various services as either a guard or a center, though the 247Sports composite ranking lists him as a center. Either way, he’ll be a valuable addition to the Buckeyes as an ultra-athletic interior lineman.

“Usually the more athletic linemen go to defense,” Landberg said. “Our whole thought process was that he’s such an incredible athlete, what would happen if we made him an offensive guard? He would stand out. We made a choice as a staff to keep him on the offensive side instead of defense for college purposes. It was an outside-the-box thought that his brand would go through the roof — to have a guy like him on the offensive line who’s more athletic than the defensive lineman in front of him.”

Jones is enrolling early, and that could provide him with an earlier path to playing the way it did for Michael Jordan as a freshman in 2016. However, there are fewer interior spots open with both guards returning and only center Billy Price departing for the NFL.

“We’re going to have him as an early enrollee, and hopefully he’ll get into the mix right away,” Landberg said. “I can’t say whether he’ll play right away because you have to gain a familiarity with the playbook, but it’s possible. We feel like he has an opportunity to play early, and I fully expect him to be an All-American football player.”
