Julius Brents, a 6-foot-2 defensive back, is considered one of the top players in Indiana, yet he opted for Iowa early in the recruiting process. Brents, a Rivals’ 4-star recruit, committed to the Hawkeyes on Sept. 1, making him the 12th verbal commitment in the Class of 2018. Julius Brents: Commitment

The way Iowa has developed defensive backs over the last 10 years made a strong impression with Indianapolis cornerback Julius Brents early in the recruiting process. When Brents committed on Sept. 1, it was in large part because of what Desmond King accomplished during his Iowa career.

“Before (King) committed he was originally supposed to go to Ball State. Iowa came in late and brought him in,” Brents told Josh Helmholdt of Rivals after his commitment. “Here’s a guy who was supposed to be a MAC player, and now is in the League. The way (Iowa) developed him, that caught my eye.

“Coach (Phil) Parker is a great defensive backs coach and has a history of putting guys in the League. It’s a great coaching staff there and I feel he can develop me.”

Other schools in Brents’ top six include Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State and Vanderbilt.

Brents will have a chance to play right away on special teams and compete for playing time as either a safety or cornerback. The Hawkeyes are likely to lose unanimous All-American cornerback Josh Jackson to the NFL, as well as strong safety Miles Taylor to graduation.

“[Brents] you were a 3-year starter in the MIC and gave up just 4 total completions at corner and 0 TD’s…. That is UNREAL!” tweeted Warren Central assistant coach Russ Mann. ” Your ability to lockdown half the field will be missed!”
