With plenty of players at running back for Notre Dame, it wasn’t a priority position in this recruiting cycle. Brian Kelly was able to focus on other areas of need while bringing in a single player to add to the stable of ball carriers he already has in place.
That individual was Jahmir Smith. Smith was thought to be a North Carolina lean, but the Lee County (N.C.) product decided to leave his home state and commit to the Irish on July 23, 2017.

How Jahmir Smith fits at Notre Dame
While Smith’s immediate role is in flux, one thing to keep in mind is that Kelly hasn’t been shy about playing freshmen at skill positions. Keeping that in mind, it will be interesting to see how much playing time Smith receives as a freshman – especially if Josh Adams declares for the NFL Draft.
If Adams doesn’t return, Smith could find himself competing among a stacked running back pool that includes C.J. Holmes, Deon McIntosh, Tony Jones Jr. and Dexter Williams. If Adams does come back, the possibility exists that Smith could put on a redshirt due to the depth already in place.
