Signee 101: Get to know Notre Dame 4-star OLB Shayne Simon

In what could prove to be the best recruiting class ever at Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish are adding several key pieces to their defense this week. That includes 4-star outside linebacker Shayne Simon.

The outside linebacker, who committed in July, officially signed his letter of intent Wednesday morning.

How Shayne Simon fits at Notre Dame

Simon is one of four defenders the Irish are adding in the 2018 class that are ranked in the top 11 at their position. That should shore up a defense that struggled in the latter part of the regular season.

Notre Dame finished the regular season 49th in both run defense and pass defense, but the unit was much weaker in the final month. During November, even though Notre Dame beat Wake Forest, the Irish allowed 348 passing yards to the Demon Deacons. Then in the season finale, the Fighting Irish yielded 8.0 yards per pass and four passing touchdowns against Stanford.

Furthermore, Notre Dame yielded 4.7 yards per rushing attempt in the final month.

Simon should be able to help in both areas. Playing some wide receiver in high school, he has the speed to fill any hole and support in tackling against shorter passes.
