Shea Patterson transferring to Michigan: Wolverines get former 5-star QB

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Shea Patterson will join the Michigan football team for the 2018 season.

Patterson, a sophomore who played the last two seasons at Mississippi, announced Monday that he will transfer and will join the Wolverines for the spring semester and for spring practices.

Patterson gives Michigan an experienced quarterback while it continues to develop four young quarterbacks: redshirt freshman Brandon Peters, freshman Dylan McCaffrey (who will redshirt this season), and incoming freshmen Joe Milton and Kevin Doyle. Peters is the only returning quarterback with any substantial experience (37-for-64 passing, 486 yards, 4 touchdown passes in five games).

Patterson is mobile, athletic and accurate, and he is capable of making big plays. He averaged 13.6 yards per pass in seven games this season with the Rebels and averaged 313.9 yards passing in 10 games over the last two seasons at Ole Miss. He passed for at least 350 yards in five of his seven starts with the Rebels, but he missed the final five games of the season with a torn ligament in his right knee, sustained Oct. 21 in a loss to LSU.

Shea Patterson’s statistics at Mississippi

Season Games Yards Passing TDs INTs
2017 7 2,259 166-260 17 9
2016 3 880 72-132 6 3

He’s also a potential NFL draft pick. projects Patterson as a first-round selection in 2019, and a strong season at Michigan will be vital for him to boost his draft stock.

Patterson was 247Sports’ No. 1 quarterback prospect in 2016 as a senior at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He has two connections to Michigan: his family held season tickets to the Wolverines, and offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz was his teammate at IMG.

Patterson is the third quarterback to transfer to Michigan in Jim Harbaugh’s three years as head coach. Jake Rudock joined the Wolverines as a graduate transfer in the spring of 2015. As Michigan’s No. 1 quarterback in 2015, Rudock had his most successful season, with 3,017 yards and 20 touchdown passes. John O’Korn joined the Wolverines in the spring of 2015 after two years at Houston, and sat out that season due to NCAA transfer restriction. In two seasons at Michigan, O’Korn has thrown for 1,129 yards and 4 touchdowns in 15 games.
