Ohio State was the victim of a creative Twitter jab from SEC Network analyst Peter Burns, and Alabama fans should appreciate the reference.
On Wednesday, Burns wrote a creative poem that poked fun at Ohio State’s 55-24 loss to Iowa on Nov. 4. As you’ll remember, the Buckeyes came in fifth in the last College Football Playoff rankings before the postseason. Alabama edged out the Big Ten champions for the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff and a berth in the Sugar Bowl, despite the Crimson Tide being shut out of the SEC Championship Game following a loss to Auburn on Nov. 25.
The rest, as they say, is history. Alabama went on to trounce Clemson in the national semifinal and stage a memorable second-half rally against Georgia in the National Championship Game.
Hat tip to Burns, who offered a little Valentine’s Day flair with the roses reference.
By now, it’s obvious that Alabama belonged in the College Football Playoff. But you’ll remember that the issue featured passionate debate before the Crimson Tide learned they would face Clemson. Those were tense moments for Alabama players, coaches and fans. But in the end, Iowa — yes, the same Iowa team that finished 8-5 — was the main reason why the Crimson Tide enjoyed another College Football Playoff berth. Ohio State, meanwhile, was sent to the Cotton Bowl to face USC in a meaningless exhibition.
Keep that love for Iowa close, Alabama fans.
