Search committee member recalls Mike Leach’s ‘bizarre’ interview at Maryland following Texas Tech firing

It’s now been eight years since Mike Leach was fired from his position as Texas Tech football’s head coach.

Leach has since found his home at Washington State, but the pirate-loving architect of the “air-raid” offense was on the brink of landing the job at Maryland before he eventually took the job in Pullman, Wash several years later.

Leach interviewed with the Terrapins in the year after he was fired by Red Raiders — a decision spawned by reports of player mistreatment towards former Texas Tech running back Adam James during concussion protocol.

And Leach’s 2010 interview for the Maryland job — much like Leach himself at times — was apparently one of a kind.

According to AL.com’s John Talty, an anonymous member of the Maryland head coaching search committee at the time described the Leach interview as one of the most “bizarre” interviews he had ever helped conduct.

“I’ve interviewed a lot of people for jobs in my career, and that was one of the more bizarre interviews. You’d ask him a question, and he would just start talking and keep talking…you are sitting there thinking ‘when is he going to get to the answer?’ And then he says, ‘Oh wait, I’m rambling. What was the question again?”

And that wouldn’t be the first or last time Leach was caught rambling away. Just watch his rant about candy corn during a post-practice interview at Washington State in October.

Leach was reportedly back in the interview room within the past month — this time with Tennessee officials to discuss the since-filled vacancy left by former Volunteers head coach Butch Jones. Of course, nobody other than those in the room with Leach will know if that meeting bore any similarities to the Maryland interview.

Leach completed his sixth regular season as Washington State’s head coach in November. The Cougars will wrap up 2017 with a trip to San Diego, Calif. this month, where they will face Michigan State in the Holiday Bowl. The game will be played at Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 28, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. PT.

Now, prepare yourself ahead of time for Mike Leach’s next instance of rambling away, whether it be before, during or after his team’s upcoming trip to sunny Southern California.
