Report: Texas DC Todd Orlando’s salary now 1.7 million

Todd Orlando’s defense was incredibly strong in Tom Herman’s first year as the head coach of the Longhorns, and Orlando is being rewarded for his performance.

His new salary will be 1.7 million, plus a car.

Needless to say, that is a literal truck-load of money. The Longhorns were No. 41 in the nation in total defense during Orlando’s first year, No. 29 in scoring defense, No. 8 in rushing defense, and No. 108 in passing yards allowed.

If those stats seem a little ridiculous, also consider that Texas played Maryland when the Terrapins had their starting quarterback, USC, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, TCU, and West Virginia during the 2017 season. It’s definitely understandable to not have your defense be high in traditional metrics when facing off against those offenses.

Orlando is now faced with the challenge of replicating or improving that performance without some of his brightest stars. DeShon Elliott, Holton Hill, Malik Jefferson, and Poona Ford are all lost to graduation or the NFL. Texas has talent coming in recruiting and they should have talent on campus, but losing that much in one year will be tough for the Longhorns to recover from in 2018.
