Report: Houston Texans claim former Auburn WR Sammie Coates

Sammie Coates reportedly has landed with the Houston Texans.

On Friday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Texans had claimed the former Auburn wide receiver. The development comes one day after the Cleveland Browns waived Coates, who had 6 catches for 70 yards in 12 games with the Browns last season.

Coates has struggled to become a standout offensive presence in recent seasons. After the Pittsburgh Steelers took him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Coates has 516 yards receiving with 2 touchdowns for his career. His best season came in 2016, when he had 435 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns in 14 games with the Steelers.

In college, Coates was a standout presence for Auburn. He totaled 1,757 yards receiving with 13 touchdowns from 2012-14.

The Texans went 4-12 last season, their worst record since going 2-14 in 2013.
