Report: Herm Edwards wants Texas Tech’s David Gibbs to be his DC

David Gibbs helped Texas Tech’s defense turn the corner from a complete joke into a functioning unit, and now he’s in the sights of other head coaches, according to SI’s Bruce Feldman.

Losing David Gibbs would be a massive blow to the Red Raiders. Defensive coordinator was a position that used to be a revolving door at Texas Tech, and Gibbs brought stability to the spot. If Gibbs does leave, Kingsbury will have to start all over again with a new defensive coordinator.

The Red Raiders aren’t terrifying on defense just yet, but they have had their successes in 2017, particularly in the turnover department. They led the Big 12 in interceptions, and were able to adequately hold teams when Kingsbury’s normally high-flying offense wasn’t clicking. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind: Texas Tech doesn’t make it to a bowl this year if they didn’t improve on the defensive side of the ball.

While there’s only reports of interest as of now, Texas Tech would be wise to lock Gibbs down. The Red Raiders are bringing back a staggering amount of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and are primed to have their best season under Kliff Kingsbury in 2018. If Gibbs leaves, all of that could conceivably go to waste.
